Madeira wine is a fortified wine from the Portuguese Island of Madeira. Unlike its better known mainland sibling Port, Madeira wine comes in all styles from dry through to sweet.
However, this is a truly classic sweet wine that is now 19 years old, cask aged for a minimum of 15 years before bottling.
This is a premium, single grape varietal wine, produced by the Canteiro process where the wine is in large wine casks which are initially stored for a minimum of 2 years in the warm attic spaces of the wine lodges, so that they reach a high temperature. The wine is later moved to a cooler area to be rested and aged before bottling.
Madeira wine continues to age in the cask indefinitely and although it is nearly 20 years old, it will have the ability to stay drinkable indefinitely. Madeira wine does not deteriorate once opened and so is an ideal by the glass serve.
A medium-sweet single varietal Madeira wine of great character. Muted aromas of toasted Almond and Black Pepper. Flavours of Toffee with Wigs with hints of Varnish and Tobacco that belies the relatively young age of this beautiful wine.
This works as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to robust savoury dishes such as duck parfait or creamy, dairy puddings.
